Private Property Signs
From time to time we receive requests for signs and traffic control devices to be used on private property. Please be aware that if the public travels on property that you may own or manage, your traffic signs, pavement markings and other traffic control devices are now required to conform to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). To view the final rule as issued by the FHWA , go to Http://dmses.gov/docimages/pdf99/433131_web.pdf. As a property owner or manager it is important to understand the risks associated with this law. In our travels we have seen "blue" Stop signs,"green" Yield signs, and many signs made with paint. These signs are simply not allowed. Property owners must be concerned with keeping customers safe while traveling on your property. It is very important to use standard signs in places such as shopping centers, recreational facilities and apartment complexes. ( See retroreflectivity requirements under our "Signs" tab.

From the very beginnings of work site traffic control in the state of Colorado in the late 1960's and early 1970's, A-1 Barricade & Sign, Inc. has been a major player in all aspects of the w ork s ite traffic control industry. Whether it is work for the Colorado Department of Transportation, or any city in Colorado, or work for a General Contractor, plumber or just a homeowner who needs some work done in the street, you will find A-1 Barricade on the job. Traffic control employees are continually trained and recertified as to all the current techniques and specifications sanctioned by the Federal Highway Administration. Most of the traffic control employees are certified as Work Site Trafiic Supervisors by The American Traffic Safety Services Association. ATSSA, as it is best known, is the industry leader in advocating roadway safety and is our industry's primary source for knowledge exchange, education, and training. ATSSA is the recognized voice and authority on roadway safety. Rick Bowman, our Vice President, has recently completed a six year term on the ATSSA Board of Director's. Mike Bowman, our Executive Vice President is now serving as the Vice President of the Colorado Chapter of ATSSA. | Rick Bowman-Former President Smitten with Lyme Disease |
August 2001, Rick Bowman was working on the Wolf Creek Project near Durango when he fell extremely ill. Well, for 5 more years, he became sicker and sicker. Finally after a Doctor in Denver decided to test for a fairly odd disease, Rick was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease, the result of a tick bite. Because the disease is incurable and very disabling, Rick has not been able to come to the office in the last seven years and is doing what work he can from home. Because of his sickness, Rick has sold the business to his wife Terry. Terry is now the President of A-1 Barricade. Mike Bowman is running the day to day operations administratively, and Jason Bowman is responsible for the field operations. Rick, along with Bob Ferguson, were the first two Coloradoans to be certified as a Work Site Traffic Supervisors by ATSSA. Bob Ferguson has since retired and he will always be missed. Without Bob, we would have never been able to grow the business like we did. Rick still holds the ATSSA certification today along with most of his employees. Rick has served as the Chapter President of ATSSA for over 8 years and has been on the ATTSA Board of Directors for six years. Rick has served on the Board of Directors of Power Credit Union for nine years and served as Chairman of the Board for two years. Rick also completed the 1983 Leadership Pueblo program.

Rick is continuing to seek treatment and has some good days and bad days. Rick wishes to express his thanks to all of the wonderful customers for their business and loyalty, the past thirty plus years. By the way Rick is attending Colorado Technical University Online and is now working on his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. Last August (2009) Rick graduated from the Associates program with high honors. What that means is that he received straight A's in all of his classes. Shortly after starting the Bachelor's program, Rick had a "flareup" of his Lyme disease and had to discontinue his studies for the time being. Rick needs only to finish twelve classes to have his Bachelor's degree. He still plans to finish his studies when he gets control of the Lyme disease again.
